In the late 1970’s, Derek’s father, “Papa” Proudian, purchased five acres of land in the heart of the Kona coffee region. His vision was to create a cross-generational business that would bring family and friends together. Sadly, he passed away shortly after purchasing the property.
Busy with his career and becoming a Papa himself, Derek had to put his father's dream on hold. Over the years, Derek and his family often visited Kona. Always a coffee lover, Derek fell in love with “the romance and tradition of Kona coffee”, and discovered that just drinking a cup in the morning would evoke for him “the rich earthiness and tropical beauty” of the place. Slowly the idea of transforming the property into a working coffee farm and retreat began to take shape.
Derek lives in California and works full time as the CEO of a high-tech Silicon Valley company. He visits Kona as often as possible and is in frequent communication with the small team he has assembled to develop and maintain the farm.
With coffee trees that were planted in 2007, the farm is now producing crops of coffee. The purpose of the Papa Kona Coffee Farm is to produce delicious coffee that can be enjoyed by family, friends and others who love Kona coffee. Discovering “a sense of place in a cup” is an experience that Derek wants to share.
The Papa Kona Coffee Farm is a living memorial to Andrew "Papa" Proudian.
